Logician 013 - 💀Horror Edition💀: Clues Explained

SO I understand that this round was a little tough. I mentioned to someone that I could post an explanation of all the clues when the round was over and they were like YES so I'm doing that.

We're going to follow the answering method from Mini's guide to keep track of our answers as we go along.

(what/who/idk/because/where) / (under/up/around/down/over) / (after/before/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7/9)

1. what, i don't know, over, down, before

Like with previous Logician puzzles, the first clue separates each of the five answers. We also know that, since these are all different answers, they won't appear together. So, we end up with this so far.

what / (under/up/around) / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7/9)
idk / (under/up/around) / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7/9)
(who/because/where) / over / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7/9)
(who/because/where) / down / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7/9)
(who/because/where) / (under/up/around) / before / (1/3/5/7/9)

2. who is over what

Okay, this is where the bullshit begins. Plus, with any luck, this clue is going to teach you the general pattern of the rest of the clues. So let's take a closer look at this one and notice the word "is." Let's replace that word with an = sign just to make it easier to decipher going forward.

who = over what

We can gather from this that "who = over" but there's that annoying "what." That's where the numbers come in. The number for "who" is over or higher than the number for "what." So now we know that "who" cannot be "1" and "what" cannot be "9," as those are the lowest and highest numbers respectively. SO-

what / (under/up/around) / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7)
idk / (under/up/around) / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7/9)
who / over / (after/now/later/yet) / (3/5/7/9)
(because/where) / down / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7/9)
(because/where) / (under/up/around) / before / (1/3/5/7/9)

3. durxqg lv ehiruh grzq

This gibberish is what we call a Caesar Cipher or Caesar Shift. It's a simple encryption method that shifts the letters of the alphabet, usually by 3 places. Most of the time, they come with a way to tell you the shift but I'm mean. Anyway, so if A=D and B=E and so on, we decode the nonsense above into:

around is before down

Look familiar? We use the same method we worked with on Clue #2 (replace is with =, replace before with lower, etc) and we end up with our latest answer.

what / (under/up) / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7)
idk / (under/up) / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7/9)
who / over / (after/now/later/yet) / (3/5/7/9)
(because/where) / down / (after/now/later/yet) / (3/5/7/9)
(because/where) / around / before / (1/3/5/7)

4. where is x in 2x+285=3(11x+2)

The easy way to solve this is to copy the algebra problem, paste it into google, and immediately get the answer. It'll actually show you how to solve it, too. Behold:

So after I made you do some math, we discover that x=9. Change the "is" and we get "where = x = 9." We don't know where "where" is (haha) but we do know where it isn't! So 9 can't be in those places either. 9 is also not with before or around. So 9 must equal down! Then, by process of elimination, the last clue must be because!

what / (under/up) / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7)
idk / (under/up) / (after/now/later/yet) / (1/3/5/7)
who / over / (after/now/later/yet) / (3/5/7)
where / down / (after/now/later/yet) / 9
because / around / before / (1/3/5/7)

5. Jackals owns a seal zoo. It's a zoo of seals.

Okay, I'm not going to paste the whole thing here. We'll just follow along with it. What we know right off the bat is that Jackals has some number of seals. We're going to call that n.

Bunny adds 4 (n + 4) then Lenga steals 2 (n + 4 - 2 aka n + 2). Raven adds 3 (n + 5), Lenga steals 5 (n + 0), Sarah adds 134 (n + 134), Bunny adds 150 (n + /digs out calculator/ 284), Mini & Lenga steal 201 (n + 83).

Now then! We get this situation. Aru finds out how many seals Jackals has left and donates half of that number, then Raven matches half of Aru's donation. Half of 83 is... oh dear. 41.5 oh no that poor seal. Half of that is 20.75 oh my god what were raven and aru thinking oh no--

But wait! We still don't know how many seals Jackals started with. But it's safe to say that it's some sort of odd number that was added to 83, that way 83 becomes even and we can split it up humanely.

Let's put a pin in this and look ahead. Mini steals another 47. Then Andie donates money, adding some unhelpful numbers for our eyes to squint at. Then Lenga and Mini add 10. This is where some people tripped up. We'll come back to it. Anyway, Anna swoops in to add another 300.

Then we find out that Lenga and Mini were just trying their best the whole time but they didn't know where people were getting the seals from, ie. they had no seals to start out with. Those 10 seals left behind didn't fall out of the seal void, they were originally part of Jackals' collection!

At the end of the day, all the seals together total 655.

Let's work backwards.
655 - 300 = 355
355 - 10 = 345
345 + 47 = 392
But wait! There's more! Lenga & Mini gave back all the seals they still have, so-
2 + 5 + 201 + 47 - 10 = 245
392 - 245 = 147
Thank God, Aru and Raven actually donated a whole number of seals, aka 147.

We'll go ahead and remove the 83 that we know Jackals had by this point (147 - 83 = 64). So now we know that half of n + 83 plus a quarter of n + 83 comes up to 64 - n. Now, I'm sure there's some formula or what not you could use to solve this, but didn't those fractions from earlier come pretty close? What if we-

1 + 83 = 84
84 / 2 = 42
42 / 2 = 21
42 + 21 = 63
63 + 84 = 147

THAT'S RIGHT, FOLKS!! Jackals started a seal zoo with only a single seal! Now! How does this help us!?

What is the number of seals Jackals started out with?

what = 1

phew

what / (under/up) / (after/now/later/yet) / 1
idk / (under/up) / (after/now/later/yet) / (3/5/7)
who / over / (after/now/later/yet) / (3/5/7)
where / down / (after/now/later/yet) / 9
because / around / before / (3/5/7)

6. If you're thinking about that one joke with the baseball team, don't worry about that. Who is not on First. What is not on Second (this is no second). I Don't Know is not on Third.

That's a reference to the old Abbott & Costello show.

But anyway, we can gather that the first, second, and third is referring to the numbers. Instead of when they place, though, we also see the (this is no second), which, IF YOU REMOVE THE TYPO i"M SO SORRY means (there is no second). There's also no 2 in the problem.

So who isn't 1 (we knew that), what isn't 2 (duh), and idk isn't 3 (oh).

what / (under/up) / (after/now/later/yet) / 1
idk / (under/up) / (after/now/later/yet) / (5/7)
who / over / (after/now/later/yet) / (3/5/7)
where / down / (after/now/later/yet) / 9
because / around / before / (3/5/7)

7. If 7 is before 9 and 9 is after 3, then 3 must come later than 1 so long as 3 is over under.

This is my favorite. Let's take it piece by piece just like we did with earlier clues.

7 = before. 7 is also lower than 9.
9 = after. 9 is also higher than 3.
3 = later. 3 is also higher than 1.
3 = over. 3 is also higher than under's number.

Lots of info in this one!! Some of it obvious but, meh, it helps.

what / under / (now/yet) / 1
idk / up / (now/yet) / 5
who / over / later / 3
where / down / after / 9
because / around / before / 7

8. When Marty McFly went to the past in that one movie with the car, he went back to a year that is under where up is now.

I also go on to mention that it's technically only in the first two movies that I'm talking about. And also make my case that this is totally a Colors-legal clue. Anyway-

Marty McFly and his sweet ride is from Back to the Future. In parts 1 & 2 of the trilogy, Marty went back in time to the year 1955. Now, it's worded a little strange but-

under = 1 (knew that)
where = 9 (knew that)
up = 5 (knew that)
now = 5 (aha!)

what / under / yet / 1
idk / up / now / 5
who / over / later / 3
where / down / after / 9
because / around / before / 7

So you could solve the puzzle at this point, but I added an extra clue for you, just in case.

9. 0110000101100110011101000110010101110010 =/= 01110111011010000110000101110100

This is binary! If we pop it into a converter, we get:

after =/= what

The "=/=" sign means NOT equal to. So after doesn't equal what. And guess what! We knew that! Congrats, you're probably correct maybe!! spoiler: you are.

Thanks for trying it!
